With an ambitious end goal of $589,000 to publish all six titles, total 31 volumes, Digital Manga’s campaign to fund the localization and production of the books, will start out with a $380,000 goal to get the first two titles published, The Three Eyed One & Rainbow Parakeet, then following a $475,000 stretch goal to get Wonder 3 and Alabaster into production, and finally The Vampires and Birdman Anthology for its final goal. Each of the title series will also include a forward from long time manga scholar and author Fred Schodt. The campaign will also include many reward tiers to backers who support this project. Rare and highly sought after Tezuka related prizes include: the original Astro Boy Poster Schematic that is 31″x43″ on heavy bond paper stock that glows in the dark to reveal Astro Boy’s inner working parts in color, Digital Manga’s one-of-a-kind customized 4’ foot long Astro Boy exhibit statue, Astro Boy plush, retro Astro Boy Tin windup toys, Tezuka figurines. Planned release date for a majority of the series are set at summer 2015.

Digital Manga’s ambitious endeavor is to deliver all volumes of publications to the supporters in one big printing for 2015 instead of sporadic releases throughout the year. Not only will the successful campaign help bring in these titles, it will also help Digital Manga to achieve their goal of localizing more Tezuka titles for the future.  DMI’s mission is to share the love of Tezuka not to just English and Japanese speakers, but to all audiences as well.

DMI/DMG Panel
Saturday, May 24th, 2014 | 12:00PM PST (Noon) | Room Panels 3

The DMI/DMG panel started on time, at 12, noon. — We opened by applauding to the crowd, letting them know this was the biggest response we’ve had for a DMI/DMG panel for all of our conventions of 2014. The first set of slides informed customers of our newest releases, including the newest Kickstarter campaign for Captain Ken. We then explained the workings behind DMG and how it’s like to have your name in a manga. A lot of people scooted to the front of their seats to learn about the behind the scenes process of translating, editing and lettering for manga books. After the panel ended, we received a large handful of questions about our newest licenses, particularly for “No Pants, No Problem”, and more questions about the specifics in becoming a member of the Digital Manga Guild. Press was also there to report on our newest licenses and announcements.

Project-H Panel
Saturday, May 24th, 2014 | 10:00PM PST | Room Panels 2

Our Project-H panel at Fanime 2014 was a big success. With a line waiting to get in, the Project-H panel was able to open the doors to its fans right on time.  The room could seat 800 and from the start, we had about 480 filled. Though fans were stumbling over each other to get a front row seating, we were not able to start the panel on time due to technical difficulties with the large theater screen, provided by the hotel. We improvised and played a game of Jan Ken Pon (Rock Paper Scissors) with the crowd for them to have a chance to earn some free books. There was a tie breaker and both guests had to stand in front of the stage for a “face off” to see who would be the true winner of our hentai manga. We delayed the crowd as much as we could until the Fanime staffers told us there was nothing they could do to remove the technical difficulty. Although there was a large black square covering a part of our presentation, we joked, “It’s okay, we’re used to being censored.” The crowd was very understanding and laughed at our humor.

We gave the crowd an interactive panel that made them “Ooou!” and “Ahh!” over our various slides. Fans were excited to see new titles and the new plans we have for Project-H. As soon as the slides were over, we opened the remainder of the panel for Q&A. Fans had all kinds of questions from, “Can you release yuri?” to “What are the current hentai trends in Japan compared to the US?” Anime News Network was there as press and covered our newest licenses and announcements.

Age Called Blue by Est Em:

Billy is the guitarist for a relatively unknown band called The Idiots. On a fateful Wednesday, two perceived unrelated events occurred: (1) his idol passed away, and (2) his roommate stole both his money and guitar. Surrounding these two events is a series of chance meetings, painful realizations, excessive alcoholism, listlessness, flashbacks, and love. This is a terribly poignant story defining the unyielding love found between a vocalist and his guitarist.

Included with this manga are a couple of side stories. One is a story of the fantastical love between an artist and his subject. The other is a story of childhood friends turned lovers and their journey through life.

Sweet Blue Flowers Vol. 1 by Takako Shimura:

Once childhood friends, sweet Aki and shy Fumi, unexpectedly reunite the year they enter separate all-girls high schools.

Fumi has learned that romance can have its thorns but in meeting an upperclassman she discovers that, like a flower hibernating through the winter, love too can grow and bloom again come spring. But has there in fact been a little flower, almost too small to see, at her side all along…?

Join Aki and Fumi in the first volume of Takako Shimura’s touching coming-of-age series as they discover more about who they are, and who they can become.

Kimagure Orange Road Vol. 1 by Izumi Matsumoto:

Teenage romance meets fantasy in this series as a love triangle develops between the main character, an indecisive esper named Kyōsuke Kasuga, Madoka Ayukawa, a mercurial and enigmatic girl with a tough past, and Hikaru Hiyama, Madoka’s ditzy and energetic best friend. Kyōsuke falls in love with Madoka, and Madoka wants to return those feelings, but can not because of Hikaru’s involvement with Kyōsuke.

Written by Izumi Matsumoto and serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump, it was later adapted into an anime series broadcast on Nippon Television, animated by Studio Pierrot and directed by veteran animator Osamu Kobayashi with character designs by Akemi Takada and scripts by Kenji Terada.

All Purpose Chemistry Club! Vol. 2 by Sho Hidaka:

Ready for another exciting adventure with the All Purpose Chemistry Club? If you said no, we’ll take that as a yes. If you said yes, then prepare yourself for more ghosts, body swapping pills, talking puppets and… wait… is that Boss with a girl?! WHAT?!
It’s just the usual everyday crazy antics of the All Purpose Chemistry Club! So what are you still reading this for? Buy it and get in on some of this awesomeness already! Geez.

INTERVIEW WITH PUKU OKUYAMA

Author of Caramel, The Rule of Standing on Tiptoe, and Warning! Whispers of Love

1. What are some things you like to do while you work to help you concentrate?

I try several methods to help me concentrate, but mostly I listen to music or even sing to keep me on track. But silence also keeps me focused on my work as well.

2. Which manga(s) do you like reading?

I enjoy reading comedy manga.

3. What type of food do you like?

Pudding. I don’t have a hobby of making sweets but pudding I sometimes make them on my own.

4. How do you usually spend your days off?

I usually spend my days off by going to karaoke, spending time going out with my husband, or simply doing work.

5. There were many scenes within Warning! Whispers of Love where Nagura found Hajime to be “cute.” In your personal opinion, in what sort of situation(s) would you say that a guy is being “cute?”

I find men cute when they are enthusiastic about what they are doing and in high spirits because just watching them puts me be in a happy mood. I believe people who can be passionate at what they are doing have great talent.

6. When you are drawing, which part of the characters do you draw first?

I usually start off drawing from the face. Often in order I first start from the outline, the nose, the eyes/eyebrows, hair and then mouth. When I’m inking, I ink the facial features first then proceed to line the contour of the face.

7. What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy painting the base colors.

A big THANK YOU to Mrs. Puku Okuyama for answering our questions and for the amazing work she has done.
